The purpose of the Firewall is to block intruders trying to gain access to your computer. You can read more about firewall software here.

The Firewall must be configured in the right way. You should get a proper guide together with your firewall. You can also test that your firewall performs properly here.

Step 2 - Install Antivirus Software

Step 3 - Keep your Antivirus definitions updated and be suspicious
When you have your Antivirus Software installed you also need to make sure that you have updated anti virus definitions continuously.

Also observe that no Antivirus software is 100%. There is always a small before the Antivirus companies update their virus definitions so be careful when opening emails that you don't know the sender or the email is unexpected.

Email viruses usually comes as an attachment to your email but it can be located within the email so your computer can actually get infected even if you don't open attachments.

Step 4 - Install Anti Spyware/Adware Software
Spyware/Adware is software that may have been installed on your computer by a remote site.

Many free utilities that you download from the Internet will install hidden software that sends details of the websites you visit and other information from your computer (which can include your email address) to advertisers so they can target you with popup ads and spam.

You find a very good Adware remover software here.

Step 5 - Keep your Operating System updated
Be sure to download and update the security patches released by the manufacturer of your Operating System. These patches often include vital protection.

Also observe that you should not accept security patches (or other vital security information) that you receive with emails. Always go to the source and download from there.

Step 6 - Keep passwords, credit card information and other vital information in encrypted form
If you need to keep important information on your computer, make sure it is very difficult to retrieve.

Step 7 - Use "strong" passwords
Try to use longer passwords with both upper and lower case, and numbers if possible.

Step 8 - Be aware that instant messaging is not secure
Don't send any vital information with instant messengers (msn messenger, icq...)

Test your security. You find several links where you can perform online security tests here.
